ACT

If you would like more information, please contact Mrs. Fox, Testing Coordinator at rochelle.fox@onslow.k12.nc.us.

ACT Basics:

  • 215 questions in 2 hours and 55 minutes
    • English: 75 questions (mechanics, rhetoric) in 45 minutes
    • Math: 60 questions (algebra, geometry trigonometry) in 60 minutes
    • Reading: 40 questions (4 passages) in 35 minutes
    • Science: 40 questions (data, research, conflicting viewpoints) in 35 minutes
  • Notice that there are lots of questions and very little time. Strategically, you want to know what the questions are asking for and then skim for the answers. You don't have time to read everything.
  • If you want to take the test a second time, you need to do it in June, July, and/or September - the October date is usually too late for college application deadlines.
  • It is estimated that it takes a minimum of 10 hours to grow your score 1 point!

  • The state of North Carolina, in conjunction with ACT, provides the ACT for all juniors in the spring of each year, free of charge and on a school day.
  • All DHS juniors will take the ACT in MARCH 2025..

ACT Preparation: You should spend 3-6 months preparing for the ACT!
