NCVPS (Virtual Courses)
Additional electives are available online through NCVPS. Courses are asynchronous, however clear deadlines are set and there may be additional requirements including:
- Labs for science courses like AP Physics, AP Chemistry, Marine Science, Forensic Science
- Can be done in our science labs during planning periods, this needs to be set up between the student and a teacher directly.
- Video Recordings or Meetings for language courses
- Zoom is the preferred platform for the language courses NCVPS. Students will need to bring their laptop to the Library to have Zoom installed and unblocked.
- Textbooks
- Dixon will find or purchase textbooks if necessary for NCVPS courses. However, this needs to be communicated by the student to Ms. Davis (NCVPS Coordinator or their counselor)
Eligibility is screened based on:
- GPA and current grades
- Attendance
- Discipline
- Previous virtual performance
- Teacher Recommendation
Requirements and limitations:
- Students may not take a course already offered at DHS, unless there is a schedule conflict determined by their counselor.
- All AP courses will be enrolled as a yearlong course, unless approved otherwise by their counselor.
- We register courses for the full school year the summer prior. Applications may be submitted for the Spring semester through the Fall semester, however we can not guarantee there will be available space once the school year starts.
- Taking a course through NCVPS does not automatically allow a student an alternative schedule (i.e. early release/late arrival). Students will be assigned a study hall period that fit around their other courses).
- Students may take NCVPS courses as part of their four required courses for the semester, or in excess. If a student chooses to take more than 4 courses, they will be responsible for completing that work outside of school.
- All NCVPS courses will be listed on the student's transcript and included in their GPA, unless dropped by the appropriate date (see below).
- Student who do not successfully complete an NCVPS course, may not be approved to take additional NCVPS courses.
Dropping Courses:
Students MUST submit a drop/change form prior to the class change deadline for that semester to drop or change an NCVPS course. Our drop/add/change deadlines are listed on our NCVPS application, please do not use the dates on the NCVPS calendar. The drop/add/change process involves multiple steps and there is no guarantee that your request will make it to the county level registrar if you submit your request on the deadline on the NCVPS calendar.
