Junior Graduates
Process
Any student that wishes to graduate in their 3rd year of high school must:
-Be making adequate progress towards graduation;
-Meet with the senior counselor, admin, and their parents to discuss and sign the Early Graduation agreement (This must occur between the end of 10th grade and the end of the Fall semester of the student's third year.).
FAQs
Will I be able to take the ACT at DHS?
-OCS only allows students who are enrolled in PowerSchool as an 11th grade at the time of testing (Feb. - March) to take the ACT at DHS. As a junior graduate, you will be changed to a 12th grader if you are making adequate academic progress towards graduation. Therefore, you would not be eligible to take the ACT at DHS. Please reach out to Ms. Balsamo for a fee waiver if you are interested in taking the ACT at a different site.
Am I allowed to participate in senior activities?
-You are not allowed to participate in senior activities or privileges, including late arrival and early release, until you are listed as a 12th grader in PowerSchool.
Will I be eligible for Valedictorian/Salutatorian?
-No, only true 4th year students are considered for Valedictorian/Salutatorian.
Will I be able to be a Marshal?
-No, Marshals are determined at the end of 11th grade and serve for their senior year.
Am I eligible to earn cords?
-Yes, you will receive all cords you are eligible for. Please note - the NC Scholar cord requires 3 advanced courses taken in 11th and/or 12th grade, as a junior graduate you must meet this requirement in your final year. Your 10th grade year will not substitute for your "11th grade year".
Will I be able to apply to college?
-Yes, but your college will reach out to Ms. Balsamo to confirm that you are graduating prior to processing your application. This process may delay your application. You should also reach out to the colleges you are applying to, to let them know you are graduating a year early to help alleviate this. You should follow the college application timeline for true seniors.
Will I be able to apply for scholarships?
-Yes, as long as you are otherwise eligible, there should not be an issue with your scholarship applications.
